Lots of great events planned for October!

We had an AWESOME meeting this past Monday!  We talked about our BAKE SALE as well as our plans for Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October) and the Vagina Monologues.

During our next meeting (Monday, October 11 at 7PM) we will be teaming up with the UH Women’s Resource Center to put up red flags on campus as part of our participation in the Red Flag Campaign.  Info about the Red Flag Campaign:  www.theredflagcampaign.org.  Also if you want us to make you an SFO t shirt, please bring us a shirt next meeting and we’ll screenprint it for you!  We are accepting donations for getting your t shirt screenprinted to reimburse Lizzy for the cost of the materials!

BAKE SALE!!  We are holding our bake sale Monday, October 18 and Tuesday, October 19 and WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!  The proceeds from Monday’s bake sale go towards SFO and the National Breast Cancer Foundation;  Proceeds from Tuesday go towards the Leiah Jackson Foundation.  Leiah was 8 months pregnant when she was killed last Sunday.

  • We are going to be holding the bake sale on campus both days from 10AM to 2:30PM and we need “bake sellers”!
  • We are going to have a “Bake Party” Sunday, October 17 from 12PM to 3PM in the Cougar Place kitchen (Cougar Place is by the Stadium off Cullen and we need bakers!
  • Email us if you can help with either of these things!

We’ll be talking more about Domestic Violence Awareness after the Bake Sale, but for now be thinking about ideas for demonstrations we could have regarding Domestic Violence.
April talked to us about the Vagina Monologues.  If you’re interested in being on the VM committee, please contact April at aprilleahrichard@gmail.com.  Committee meetings will be held some Tuesdays at 6PM at Bohemeo’s.  We’ll be performing next semester on campus.  Auditions to be a performer in our production of the VM will most likely be held the last week of October.

The UH Health Center will offer free breast exams from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13 and Thursday, Oct. 21 to all UH students, staff and faculty with a photo ID. No appointment is needed. For more information, call 713-743-5151.

Students for a Democratic Society at UH are hosting a rally opposing the occupation in Afghanistan this Thursday at 10AM at the UC Satellite.  Thursday evening at 7PM in the Honors College Room 212S, Dr. Buzzanco from the history department will be holding a “Teach In” about the status of the war 9 years since its beginning.
